Welcome! to Want to Know

Imagine a world where technology truly serves everyone.
Hi, I'm Jessica Want. For over 20 years, my journey to human-centered design and product innovation has been diverse — from growing up as the child of immigrants in Brooklyn through a stint in social work to leading digital transformation at The New York Public Library. Along the way, I've learned that the most powerful innovations come from embracing diverse perspectives and creating inclusive digital spaces. Today, as a tech leader and mom to an energetic almost 6-year-old, I'm more passionate than ever about developing ethical, accessible technology that empowers all users, regardless of their circumstances.
My Journey
My career has taken me from startups to giants like Amazon and Barnes & Noble, where I've grappled with the power and responsibility of creating digital products. But, the unexpected turns in my personal life have defined my path.
A few years ago, my world turned upside down when my partner fell seriously ill. Suddenly, I was juggling a demanding career, a young child, and the role of primary caregiver. This challenging period taught me more about my own resilience and human connection.
I'm happy to say we've come through that difficult time. My partner is recovering well, one liver transplant later, and our little family has found a new rhythm. We even managed to move house in the midst of it all – because why not add a little more chaos to the mix, right?
These experiences have only strengthened my passion for creating ethical, inclusive technology. I've seen firsthand how digital tools can be a lifeline during tough times (anyone else navigating the Gordian Knot of digital insurance forms & their multiple spontaneously opening windows?). I'm more committed than ever to ensuring these tools serve all users, regardless of their circumstances.
What to Expect
In this blog, I'll share insights from my professional and personal journeys. Expect discussions on ethical tech practices, inclusive design, and the challenges of balancing a tech career with family life. And because I can't help myself, there will be musings on self-care and the occasional project – be it hiking, quilting, knitting, crocheting, or learning to play cello. Sometimes, the best way to solve a problem is to step away and create something with your hands (or bow).
Fair warning: I might get a bit nerdy about human-centered design principles or geek out over the latest accessibility features. But I promise to balance it out with real talk about the messy, beautiful reality of trying to change the world while also remembering to make space for make-believe tea parties. Bringing my whole self to work makes me better at what I do.
Let's Connect
I invite you to join me on this journey. In the comments, share your thoughts, experiences, and questions. Let's learn from each other and explore how we can make technology work better for all of us—one user story, one craft project, and one (not so make-believe) cup of coffee at a time.
Warmly,
Jessica
[Article image prompt: A surreal illustration of an inviting digital space that combines the warmth of a cozy home with the sleekness of modern technology. The scene should feature a mother is with her 6 year old daughter sitting with her back to us at well-lit desk with a laptop open to a blog page, surrounded by personal touches like a cup of coffee, knitting supplies, and a cello resting in the corner on the floor. In the background, a bookshelf filled with tech books and craft supplies reflects the balance between innovation and creativity. A window with sunlight streaming through reveals a view of a lively cityscape, representing the diverse perspectives that fuel innovation. The overall mood is welcoming and inspiring, with soft, warm colors that invite readers to join in on the journey of ethical tech and inclusive design..]
